{"id":12191,"date":"2026-09-22T09:33:04","date_gmt":"2026-09-22T06:33:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.coeng.uobaghdad.edu.iq\/?p=12191"},"modified":"2026-09-22T09:33:04","modified_gmt":"2026-09-22T06:33:04","slug":"college-of-engineering-university-of-baghdad-discusses-phd-dissertation-on-the-structural-efficiency-of-composite-beams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/en.coeng.uobaghdad.edu.iq\/?p=12191","title":{"rendered":"College of Engineering, University of Baghdad, Discusses PhD Dissertation on the Structural Efficiency of Composite Beams"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h1><\/h1>\n<p>The College of Engineering at the University of Baghdad held a public defense for <strong>PhD candidate Wisam Hazim Khalil<\/strong> from the Department of Civil Engineering, who presented his dissertation entitled <strong>\u201cStructural Efficiency of Composite Beams Made of Concrete and Asymmetric Steel Sections with Expanded Open Web under Monotonic Loading.\u201d<\/strong> The defense was held on <strong>Monday, August 31, 2026<\/strong>, at the <strong>Dr. Khalid Shakir Hall<\/strong>, under the supervision of <strong>Prof. Dr. Ahmed Jabbar Hussein<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The study evaluated an innovative fabrication technique for developing <strong>asymmetric expanded steel sections<\/strong>. This was achieved by using two separate T-shaped structural sections cut from standard hot-rolled <strong>IPE 180<\/strong> and <strong>IPE 200<\/strong> sections for the upper and lower flanges, respectively. The two sections were connected using steel plates to increase the web depth. Two alternative connection configurations were investigated: the first employed <strong>3 mm-thick double-sided plates<\/strong> on both sides of the web, while the second used a <strong>single 6 mm-thick central plate<\/strong>, approximately equal to the web thickness of the original asymmetric sections. Through these configurations, web expansion ratios of <strong>30%, 50%, and 70%<\/strong> of the reference total depth were achieved and analyzed.<\/p>\n<p>Comprehensive <strong>experimental and numerical analyses<\/strong> were conducted to evaluate the structural behavior of composite <strong>concrete\u2013steel beams<\/strong> incorporating asymmetric expanded steel sections. The specimens were tested under a <strong>four-point symmetrical bending configuration<\/strong> over a clear span of <strong>2,500 mm<\/strong> to assess the structural performance of these beam systems.<\/p>\n<p>The first part of the research involved an experimental investigation in which <strong>sixteen specimens<\/strong> were fabricated and tested. These included one unexpanded specimen and fifteen composite concrete\u2013steel beams with asymmetric steel sections and web expansion ratios of <strong>30%, 50%, and 70%<\/strong>. In the second part, the experimental results were first validated using <strong>finite element (FE) numerical modelling<\/strong> through the <strong>ABAQUS<\/strong> software. A new numerical model was then analyzed by incorporating additional variables, allowing further models to be developed at a lower cost.<\/p>\n<p>The experimental results demonstrated that increasing the web expansion ratio significantly improved the <strong>load-carrying capacity<\/strong> of the specimens by <strong>82.3%, 113.4%, and 117.4%<\/strong> for web expansion ratios of <strong>30%, 50%, and 70%<\/strong>, respectively, compared with the unexpanded specimen.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding the use of <strong>curvature in the lower steel section<\/strong>, in addition to improving the ultimate load capacity, it also increased the deformation capacity at the ultimate state by <strong>12.23%, 2.25%, and 32.48%<\/strong>, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Following the scientific discussion by the members of the examination committee, the candidate\u2019s defense, and the evaluation of the dissertation, the researcher was awarded a <strong>PhD degree in Civil Engineering \/ Structural Engineering<\/strong>.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery interval=&#8221;3&#8243; images=&#8221;12193&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;] The College of Engineering at the University of Baghdad held a public defense for PhD candidate Wisam Hazim &#8230; <a class=\"cz_readmore\" href=\"https:\/\/en.coeng.uobaghdad.edu.iq\/?p=12191\"><i class=\"fa fa-angle-left\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><span>\u0627\u0644\u0645\u0632\u064a\u062f<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":165,"featured_media":12194,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_lmt_disableupdate":"","_lmt_disable":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[35,31],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-12191","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-civil-engineering","category-thesis"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.7 -
