{"id":11975,"date":"2026-09-06T10:20:51","date_gmt":"2026-09-06T07:20:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.coeng.uobaghdad.edu.iq\/?p=11975"},"modified":"2026-09-06T10:20:51","modified_gmt":"2026-09-06T07:20:51","slug":"public-discussion-of-a-masters-thesis-in-the-surveying-engineering-department","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/en.coeng.uobaghdad.edu.iq\/?p=11975","title":{"rendered":"Public Discussion of a Master\u2019s Thesis in the Surveying Engineering Department"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<p>The College of Engineering at the University of Baghdad witnessed the public discussion of the Master\u2019s thesis submitted by postgraduate student <strong>Sarah Majeed Wadi<\/strong> in the Department of Surveying Engineering, entitled:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cLand Uses between Theoretical and Applied Urban Planning in the Capital, Baghdad, Using Geographic Information Systems.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The discussion was held on <strong>Wednesday, August 26, 2026<\/strong>, in the <strong>Prof. Fawzi Al-Khalisi Hall<\/strong>, under the supervision of <strong>Prof. Dr. Youssef Hussein Khalaf<\/strong> and <strong>Prof. Dr. Alaa Dawood Salman<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Objectives of the Thesis<\/h3>\n<p>The thesis aims to assess the impact of climate change, particularly fluctuations in rainfall and periods of drought, on the soil properties of Baghdad and the resulting geotechnical hazards. The study focuses on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Analyzing the impact of climate change on the physical and mechanical properties of soil.<\/li>\n<li>Identifying geotechnical hazards associated with alternating drought and wet conditions, including differential settlement, swelling, shrinkage, and foundation instability.<\/li>\n<li>Monitoring spatial and temporal changes in soil moisture and vegetation cover using <strong>Remote Sensing (RS)<\/strong> and <strong>Geographic Information Systems (GIS)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Integrating satellite imagery and remote-sensing data with information obtained from <strong>143 groundwater wells<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Preparing spatial maps of geotechnical hazards across Baghdad to support urban planning and engineering design.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Conclusions<\/h3>\n<p>The study reached several important conclusions. It revealed clear fluctuations in the climatic and environmental patterns of Baghdad, with variations in rainfall and drought having a significant impact on soil moisture and soil behavior.<\/p>\n<p>A <strong>very strong inverse correlation<\/strong> was identified between changes in vegetation cover and surface moisture. The <strong>Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI)<\/strong> and <strong>Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI)<\/strong> proved effective in monitoring variations in surface moisture and vegetation cover, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The study also identified a <strong>weak but statistically significant correlation<\/strong> between groundwater depth and changes in surface moisture.<\/p>\n<p>Repeated cycles of drought and wet conditions resulted in changes in <strong>shear strength, cohesion, and the angle of internal friction<\/strong>, consequently affecting the bearing capacity of the soil.<\/p>\n<p>The research identified areas of <strong>high geotechnical risk<\/strong> associated with fluctuations in groundwater levels and soil sensitivity. These areas are particularly susceptible to differential settlement, swelling, and shrinkage.<\/p>\n<p>The integration of <strong>remote sensing, field-based geotechnical data, and GIS<\/strong> proved to be an economical and efficient approach for assessing geotechnical risks at the city scale.
