The Department of Architecture at the College of Engineering, University of Baghdad was established in 1959, offering a five-year undergraduate program leading to a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture. Until the academic year 2022-2023, the department had produced over 3000 architectural engineers, many of whom have achieved remarkable architectural accomplishments in various sectors within Iraq, as well as on the Arab and global architectural scene.<\/p>\n

The department admits between 50-60 students annually for undergraduate studies, with 10% of the accepted students being foreign or Arab. The curriculum includes both theoretical and practical subjects, covering architectural design, graphics, building construction, interior design, landscape design, architecture theory, Islamic architecture, philosophy and criticism, environment, technology, planning, urban design, and supporting courses in construction, HVAC, and plumbing. In addition, courses in Arabic and English languages, human rights, and democracy are also offered. The courses are structured in balanced units, adhering to international university standards.<\/p>\n

The Master’s degree program in Architectural Sciences was established in the late 1970s, and has been a two-year program since then. The program offers three specific tracks: Environment and Architecture Technology, Architecture Theory and Islamic Architecture, and Housing and Urban Design. The program has produced around 300 graduates until the academic year 2022-2023.<\/p>\n

The Doctorate degree program in Architectural Sciences was also established in the mid-1980s. The program is at least three years long and has produced around 55 graduates until the academic year 2022-2023. The curriculum covers a wide range of specialized subjects, including history and philosophy of architecture, Islamic architecture, technology, urban development, housing issues, and other related sciences.<\/p>\n

A.1 Vision<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

A Department of Architecture that is one among the best, not only in Iraq but also throughout the region.<\/p>\n

  1. It seeks to develop the base of an Iraqi architectural school that should be influenced by past heritage in the world of Arab architecture, with special respect to Iraq, within a sophisticated and contemporary framework well-rooted in history toward the service of the nation.<\/li>\n
  2. Be in harmony with the aspirations of the new Iraq by understanding the mentality of the intended Iraqi School of Architecture. This implies binding historical and national data together in order to come up with contemporary innovative buildings that will reflect the civilization of the nation across all ages.<\/li>\n
  3. It provides in-depth understandings of local significance through architectural elements that cover environmental and place-specific privacy, city planning, urban fabric, urban design, and construction but with the use of local materials and techniques yet on a human scale both in individual and collective buildings<\/li>\n
  4. Keeping pace with advanced technologies in educational curricula and courses, especially in computer-aided design, and its recent applications in advanced drawing. This involves the student development in presentation of architectural designs through modern technology.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    A.2 Mission<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

    Build a base of creative and intellectual scientific cadre, consonant with the aspirations of new Iraq. The graduate will be readied totally to be able to perform effectively in his specialized role and while building the country and nation by:<\/p>\n

    1. Instilling ideas that involve the moral and national legacy of the nation, relating them to privacy and intellectual mechanisms and raising the level of these traditions in application.<\/li>\n
    2. Promoting a spirit of endurance, honoring the rebuilding and innovation process, and developing capabilities through research and scientific studies. Graduates will also be qualified to continue postgraduate education that enhances the construction of the national information base and a national identity.<\/li>\n
    3. Accepting international activities in architecture and using them to advance and enhance Iraqi architectural values.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Provide a scientific basis for a corps of specialists in architectural science based on creativity and intellectual excellence consistent with the aspirations of the new Iraq within the contexts of social, cultural, and architectural development. The program places ethics and ideas related to the national heritage, intellectual privacy, and scientific development into operation as well. It supports the capacity to absorb international development in architecture and use this support as well in the promotion of architectural values.<\/p>\n

      These PEOs are established in line with the departmental mission, capturing the vast changes in the environment and the recent developments in environmental control and sustainability. They form an integral part of the comprehensive information base at every academic level. These have to be prescribed among the curricula.<\/p>\n
